Fantasy Flowers

I just love creating fantasy flowers.  I suppose it’s because I don’t have to match them to anything.  I can be totally free to make whatever looks good to me.  Here’s my latest creation.  I guess its similar to a dahlia but not really.  This flower is fondant but it could have been made from gumpaste also.

This cake is for my neighbor’s daughter’s birthday.  Since Rob has been sick they have done so much for us.  You know you always think you have good neighbors but when you need them you realize you have GREAT neighbors.  They have really stepped up to keep our yard looking good while we’ve been unable to take care of it.  Rob and I appreciate everything they have done and are continuing to do for us.

Monkey Business!

My friend, Carissa, is having a baby!  I was honored to be a small part of her baby shower.  Baby B’s nursery has a jungle theme and I just love monkeys.  Here’s the cake I created in honor of the new one.

Carissa is a chocolate fiend so I knew I must have chocolate cake for her.  The base tier is chocolate decadence with a super chocolate cake which includes Ghirardelli chocolate chips.   Chocolate overload to the max!

The top tier is lemon with lemon curd filling.  The lemon curd takes the lemon cake to a whole new level.  You’ve got to try it!

The monkey is made from chocolate fondant.  The bananas are vanilla fondant, hand cut and painted.

. . .  it has been a busy week.

Gingerbread Man for a Christmas Party with friends.  He is, of course, pumpkin gingerbread with fresh grated ginger root.  It really makes the difference in the recipe!

Ambria’s birthday cake.  She’s in the youth group at church.  Chocolate cake, chocolate icing, fondant decorations.

These are for our church elders and their families.  Red Velvet and spice cake each with vanilla buttercream and fondant snowflakes.   One of the wives doesn’t enjoy cake – I didn’t think anyone disliked cake – so I made them a Turtle cheesecake.

His Birthday Suit

My father-in-law’s birthday is today.  With all the scheduling around work schedules of my kids and church schedules today we celebrated a day early.  I’m sure he’s still celebrating.  He loves to streeeeetch out the celebrations!  We had a dinner at Outback Steakhouse – my MIL’s treat and then cake and gifts later at their home.  I have a hard time coming up with ideas for cakes for guys.  They don’t seem to like the flowery cakes the ladies like – wonder why?

So, fess up.  How many of you give your dad a shirt and tie as gifts at least once during the year?  Dads are so hard to buy for.  Here’s my version of a shirt at tie.  Actually, it’s a birthday suit everyone can enjoy.  Pumpkin cake, toffee buttercream with toffee chips filling, fondant decorations – mostly chocolate but some vanilla.

The Bomb Diggity!

One of my best friend’s birthday is today!  She’s sampled several of my cakes but her favorite is strawberry cake with cream cheese icing.  I don’t particularly enjoy working with cream cheese icing.  I just can’t seem to get it smooth like buttercream.  But, because it is her favorite I relented this time and used the cream cheese.  Myrene help with this one because once again I couldn’t smooth it.  The seeds and leaves are fondant and the chocolate wrap is Belgian chocolate fondant.  The writing around the side, which you can’t see, says “Happy Birthday to the Bomb Diggity”.  That’s one of Karena’s favorite sayings.

Myrene and I make our fondant instead of purchasing commercially made fondant.  Premium chocolate is used in our chocolate fondant which gives it a rich chocolate taste.  Our basic fondant, while typically vanilla, can be flavored and colored almost any way imaginable.  We use quality ingredients found in our local shops.

For those of you who haven’t noticed, it is freezing here – literally!  It has been extremely cold for the last few days and will be the rest of the week.  So, what does this have to do with cakes?  I was working on a fondant cake tonight and my kitchen got too hot so I opened a window.  It was 20 degrees outside and I had a window open!  My husband was huddled under a blanket on the sofa while I worked.

The first cake is for my Bunco group tomorrow night.  It is a triple chocolate cake.  Hope everyone enjoys it.

Then, my second cake was for a birthday.  The Birthday Lady enjoys traveling.  I kept thinking about the Dr Seuss book “Oh, the places you’ll go”  but I just  couldn’t make a Dr Seuss cake for an adult.   Here’s my grown up version.

You can’t see all of the writing around the cake but I bet you can fill in the blanks.
