Mickey Mouse Club – Twisted and Warped!  That’s what my husband labeled this one.

This cake was created for my friend Hayden for his 14th birthday.  His idea, not mine.  The four “slices of bread” are fondant covered cake.  The cheese, lettuce, tomato and even our rodent friend are fondant.  If you don’t care for fondant this isn’t your cake!

When I made this cake I wasn’t sure if it would serve the number of people invited to Hayden’s party so I also made cupcakes.  Mom just couldn’t bring herself to cut the cake so everyone at the party ate cupcakes.  Luckily, there were enough cupcakes to go around.  They finally cut the cake the next day at their family celebration.

Remember the light bulb cake last year?  Well, this wimpy cake is for Eric.  He’s got such an original personality.  Eric loves the Wimpy Kid.

As requested, this cake is super decadent chocolate cakes with Ghiradelli chocolate chips.  The cake is covered with vanilla buttercream and the decorations are chocolate buttercream.

Emalee requested cuppies for her birthday and she loves bright colors and flowers.  I was able to locate cupcake liners with a bright floral design I knew Emalee would like.  The cupcakes are vanilla (her favorite) with vanilla buttercream flowers.

I’m told that the family had cupcakes as appetizers before dinner and as dessert after.  Now, that’s my kind of birthday celebration!

Monkey Business!

My friend, Carissa, is having a baby!  I was honored to be a small part of her baby shower.  Baby B’s nursery has a jungle theme and I just love monkeys.  Here’s the cake I created in honor of the new one.

Carissa is a chocolate fiend so I knew I must have chocolate cake for her.  The base tier is chocolate decadence with a super chocolate cake which includes Ghirardelli chocolate chips.   Chocolate overload to the max!

The top tier is lemon with lemon curd filling.  The lemon curd takes the lemon cake to a whole new level.  You’ve got to try it!

The monkey is made from chocolate fondant.  The bananas are vanilla fondant, hand cut and painted.

Keepin’ it sweet!

His Birthday Suit

My father-in-law’s birthday is today.  With all the scheduling around work schedules of my kids and church schedules today we celebrated a day early.  I’m sure he’s still celebrating.  He loves to streeeeetch out the celebrations!  We had a dinner at Outback Steakhouse – my MIL’s treat and then cake and gifts later at their home.  I have a hard time coming up with ideas for cakes for guys.  They don’t seem to like the flowery cakes the ladies like – wonder why?

So, fess up.  How many of you give your dad a shirt and tie as gifts at least once during the year?  Dads are so hard to buy for.  Here’s my version of a shirt at tie.  Actually, it’s a birthday suit everyone can enjoy.  Pumpkin cake, toffee buttercream with toffee chips filling, fondant decorations – mostly chocolate but some vanilla.

Keepin’ it sweet!

a squished North Carolina.  Have you ever noticed the long and narrow shape of our state?  Well, I had never related it to a cake shape until this week.  My neighbor’s sister, dad and his girlfriend are visiting them this week all the way from California.  This is the first time they’ve been here since Sandy moved here a few years ago.  Sandy asked me to make a cake for them with the shape of North Carolina.  At first I thought it would be easy-peasy but then I compared the shape of the state related to a 9×12 sheet pan and realized if I carved to correct shape the cake would only serve 4!  Maybe a few more but not many.   With a little artistic license I reshaped the Great State of North Carolina to allow for more servings.  You know, it’s all about the cake!

Since the family is all about chocolate this cake is chocolate with chocolate buttercream.  I suspect it won’t last long past dinner.

Two Cakes on a Three Dog Night!

For those of you who haven’t noticed, it is freezing here – literally!  It has been extremely cold for the last few days and will be the rest of the week.  So, what does this have to do with cakes?  I was working on a fondant cake tonight and my kitchen got too hot so I opened a window.  It was 20 degrees outside and I had a window open!  My husband was huddled under a blanket on the sofa while I worked.

The first cake is for my Bunco group tomorrow night.  It is a triple chocolate cake.  Hope everyone enjoys it.

Then, my second cake was for a birthday.  The Birthday Lady enjoys traveling.  I kept thinking about the Dr Seuss book “Oh, the places you’ll go”  but I just  couldn’t make a Dr Seuss cake for an adult.   Here’s my grown up version.

You can’t see all of the writing around the cake but I bet you can fill in the blanks.

Psychedelic Peppermint Patty

This cake is for my boss’ wife.  It’s her birthday.  It is a peppermint patty cake – chocolate cake, peppermint filling, chocolate icing.  I just love a good peppermint patty after dinner and this one will satisfy better than York!

The flowers remind me of the hippie movement.  I’ve been wanting to do some brush embroidery and I finally had the opportunity today.  As I was working on it I kept getting whiffs of the chocolate and peppermint.  It was really tempting but I resisted!
