Mickey Mouse Club – Twisted and Warped!  That’s what my husband labeled this one.

This cake was created for my friend Hayden for his 14th birthday.  His idea, not mine.  The four “slices of bread” are fondant covered cake.  The cheese, lettuce, tomato and even our rodent friend are fondant.  If you don’t care for fondant this isn’t your cake!

When I made this cake I wasn’t sure if it would serve the number of people invited to Hayden’s party so I also made cupcakes.  Mom just couldn’t bring herself to cut the cake so everyone at the party ate cupcakes.  Luckily, there were enough cupcakes to go around.  They finally cut the cake the next day at their family celebration.

Remember the light bulb cake last year?  Well, this wimpy cake is for Eric.  He’s got such an original personality.  Eric loves the Wimpy Kid.

As requested, this cake is super decadent chocolate cakes with Ghiradelli chocolate chips.  The cake is covered with vanilla buttercream and the decorations are chocolate buttercream.

Emalee requested cuppies for her birthday and she loves bright colors and flowers.  I was able to locate cupcake liners with a bright floral design I knew Emalee would like.  The cupcakes are vanilla (her favorite) with vanilla buttercream flowers.

I’m told that the family had cupcakes as appetizers before dinner and as dessert after.  Now, that’s my kind of birthday celebration!

Monkey Business!

My friend, Carissa, is having a baby!  I was honored to be a small part of her baby shower.  Baby B’s nursery has a jungle theme and I just love monkeys.  Here’s the cake I created in honor of the new one.

Carissa is a chocolate fiend so I knew I must have chocolate cake for her.  The base tier is chocolate decadence with a super chocolate cake which includes Ghirardelli chocolate chips.   Chocolate overload to the max!

The top tier is lemon with lemon curd filling.  The lemon curd takes the lemon cake to a whole new level.  You’ve got to try it!

The monkey is made from chocolate fondant.  The bananas are vanilla fondant, hand cut and painted.

Timing is Everything!

I had a really busy weekend.  I spent Friday evening and all day Saturday in Cary with the youth from our church.  After arriving home at 11pm Saturday night I got up early to write on a cake (you’ll see that tomorrow) and headed off to church.  One of my favorite families had a family health crisis and had to travel home to WV on short notice.  We stuck close to them to help them get things ready and arrangements made so they could leave town for a few days.  We also locked the keys in the van and had to call a locksmith, but that’s another story!

One of my co-workers had a birthday today.  I had planned on getting his cake ready Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon but that didn’t work out.  He was OK with waiting a day for his cake.  So I promised one tomorrow.  Here’s the thing though.  There is a timing issue with baking and decorating cakes.  Ideally, you need to bake one day and decorate the next.  This time allows the layers to settle and compress a little.  Here’s what happens when you don’t have that “settling time”.  That’s right, it’s the battle of the bulge!  Drives me crazy!  Luckily, the guys at work are easy.  They just want it to taste good.

This cake is chocolate with peanut butter filling.  I’ve made a couple of these lately but haven’t been able to taste them.  This time I will.

Labor Day Laboring!

Why is it that holidays take so much work?  Here it is a holiday to celebrate the laborers that made this country (More info on Labor Day history here.) and I’m slaving in the kitchen.   My Labor Day was spent on a cake.  Are you surprised???  Rob and I had an invitation to friends’ house for a cookout.  It was a bring your own meat and a side to share kind of event.  For me, this is ingenious.  Everyone can eat what they want, we had a variety from hot dogs to fish to filet mignon.  Guess what I ate. 🙂

When I received the invitation, my friend says “We all know what side you need to bring!  Cake!”  I like to do experimental things on these casual occasions; techniques I haven’t done before and may need a little practice.  This time I picked scroll work.  I absolutely love the look of good scrolls.  It’s a classic that lends a simple elegance but it takes practice and a steady hand.  So here’s my creation – margarita cake, lemon curd/lime buttercream filling all covered in a light lime buttercream.  It was out of this world and I don’t think it looked too shabby either!

Does this remind you of a Henna Tattoo?

Remember as kids going to the beach a coming home with a tattoo?  Well, a temporary one anyway.  When I finished this cake it reminded me of those tattoos.

Myrene has had these paisley shaped pans for months now and we have been looking for an opportunity to use them.  It’s such a fun shape.  Well, this week opportunity came a knockin’.  My birthday was Thursday.  For some reason my family won’t make a cake for me and they know better than to buy one from the grocery!  So, I decided to take the opportunity and try something new.  No matter how it turned out I figured the birthday girl wouldn’t mind.  I made and orange cake with a creamy chocolate filling.   I love chocolate and orange together.  The cake is covered with vanilla buttercream and the piping is vanilla buttercream, also.

Third and final cake of the weekend!  This one is for my son-in-law, Matt.  His birthday is Monday but we are celebrating Sunday.  Matt couldn’t come up with what he wanted on his cake.  Heather volunteered that he had been reading a lot of space science books lately.  Not the Sci-Fi kind, real space books.  So, I created the universe for him.  The cake is orange (as requested) with orange butter cream.  The butter cream reminds me of Creamsicles from my childhood.  Planets are gumpaste covered Styrofoam.  Yes, there are 9 planets there.  I still count Pluto!

April must be a big birthday month.  Three birthday cakes this weekend.  I’ve already delivered two and have one more to make tomorrow.

The first cake was for a friend’s wife.  Her birthday is today.  This cake is a super moist strawberry cake with vanilla butter cream icing.  The decorations are all edible – although not all that palatable.  The flowers are a mixture of fondant and gum paste.  It’s the gum paste the ruins the taste but it is a necessary element in some decorations.  My friend called shortly after he picked up the cake to let me know it was a fine breakfast food!

My second cake of the day was for a disco themed 40th birthday.  It is pound cake with vanilla butter cream icing.  Yes, it is a HUGE cake – 12″.  Actually, this is 2 recipes of my pound cake.  Hope someone has a sweet tooth!  Black squares on the dance floor are fondant.  Colored squares are painted butter cream.  The dancer is fondant and gum paste but this one isn’t edible because of the construction elements.  Just a FYI – black fondant turns your teeth green.

It’s a Topsy-Turvy Groovy World!

My neighbors asked me to make a cake for their daughter’s 12th birthday.  I’ll be the first one to admit that I’m a little out of sync with the tweeners.  It seems that the 60s groovy theme is back.  (I missed it the first time!)  Bright neon colors, flowers and peace signs were the requests.  Gabrielle is all about the flower child.

Myrene and I wanted to tackle a topsy-turvy cake.  Since my neighbors are kind enough to allow me to use them as guinea pigs we thought we would take the opportunity to make Gabrielle’s cake “a little off”.

The process was a little nerve wracking when it came to stacking the second tier on the first.  But it was easier that I thought it would be.  Funny how new things intimidate you for no reason.

The cake is vanilla with vanilla buttercream and fondant accents.  It weighed as much as a small child, really it did.  We estimated it at around 25lbs.  Now, that is a lot of cake.

Have you ever met someone and known instantly that you would like them?  I “met” Wendy on the phone a few weeks ago.  We’ve had quick phone conversations and hurried meetings a few times since but I finally got a few minutes to talk with her tonight.  And, I was right.  I do like her, she’s my kind of person.  Anyway, tomorrow is Wendy’s birthday.  She’s a graduate of Campbell University and will be starting pharmacy school there later this year.  She’s so excited!  Wendy’s cake reflects her pride in her school and her accomplishments.  Happy Birthday Wendy!

Hey, does this cake look big?  It is a little oversize.   It is a 12″ 2 layer pound cake.  The cake required 2 recipes of the pound cake and 3 batches of buttercream.  I think the cake may weigh 10 lbs!
