Fantasy Flowers

I just love creating fantasy flowers.  I suppose it’s because I don’t have to match them to anything.  I can be totally free to make whatever looks good to me.  Here’s my latest creation.  I guess its similar to a dahlia but not really.  This flower is fondant but it could have been made from gumpaste also.

This cake is for my neighbor’s daughter’s birthday.  Since Rob has been sick they have done so much for us.  You know you always think you have good neighbors but when you need them you realize you have GREAT neighbors.  They have really stepped up to keep our yard looking good while we’ve been unable to take care of it.  Rob and I appreciate everything they have done and are continuing to do for us.

Mickey Mouse Club – Twisted and Warped!  That’s what my husband labeled this one.

This cake was created for my friend Hayden for his 14th birthday.  His idea, not mine.  The four “slices of bread” are fondant covered cake.  The cheese, lettuce, tomato and even our rodent friend are fondant.  If you don’t care for fondant this isn’t your cake!

When I made this cake I wasn’t sure if it would serve the number of people invited to Hayden’s party so I also made cupcakes.  Mom just couldn’t bring herself to cut the cake so everyone at the party ate cupcakes.  Luckily, there were enough cupcakes to go around.  They finally cut the cake the next day at their family celebration.

Remember the light bulb cake last year?  Well, this wimpy cake is for Eric.  He’s got such an original personality.  Eric loves the Wimpy Kid.

As requested, this cake is super decadent chocolate cakes with Ghiradelli chocolate chips.  The cake is covered with vanilla buttercream and the decorations are chocolate buttercream.

Emalee requested cuppies for her birthday and she loves bright colors and flowers.  I was able to locate cupcake liners with a bright floral design I knew Emalee would like.  The cupcakes are vanilla (her favorite) with vanilla buttercream flowers.

I’m told that the family had cupcakes as appetizers before dinner and as dessert after.  Now, that’s my kind of birthday celebration!

Birthday Weekend

Wow, what a week!  Both my neighbors and my good friends had daughters with birthday celebrations on Saturday.  Gabrielle turned 13 on Friday.  Her folks picked out her cake and I think they made a great choice.  Gabrielle likes animal print and bright pink so this was perfect for her.  The cake is vanilla with chocolate buttercream filling and a vanilla buttercream covering.  The decorations are fondant.  The zebra stripes war painted on the fondant.

Hailee turned 19 on Thursday.  She requested root beer cake but the design was up to me.  I had seen pictures of this type of topsy-turvy cake and wanted to try it so this was a great opportunity.  The bottom tier is root beer cake with root beer icing.  To please everyone at the party, the top layer is marble cake with vanilla buttercream.  The flower stems are piped buttercream and the flowers are fondant.

Funny story here – when Rob first saw the cake I was delivering it to Hailee’s family.  He thought in the transport that something had happened and the cake had shifted.  Then, as others were arriving they made the same comments.

My boss’ birthday is three days before halloween and one of her favorite candies is, strangely, candy corn. The fondant was all vanilla, but the cake was orange flavored. This simple, yet cute, cake was very appreciated by the boss lady.

My neighbor, Mike, likes to play the piano.  His wife and girls decided on a piano cake for his birthday.  Since they didn’t need too many servings its cut from a 9×13 chocolate cake.  The cake is covered in vanilla buttercream and then chocolate fondant.  The keys were added with vanilla and chocolate fondant.  Did you notice the slight wood grain on the piano?  Hey, that’s Mike on the top, he’s all fondant and totally edible.

Arctic Wolf

Brittany loves Arctic wolves but she especially loves her version of an Arctic wolf.  Brittany’s version has beautiful blue eyes and if it were so it would be prettier than those menacing grey eyes they naturally have.  However, I’m sure if I ever come up on a wolf, grey-eyed or blue-eyed, I’d run for the hills!

Brittany’s mom wanted to surprise her with a special cake for her birthday sleepover party.  This cake is chocolate with vanilla buttercream.  All of the decorations are buttercream.  Mom told me earlier today that Brittany LOVED her cake.

Shark Attack!

This cake is for my friend’s son Ashton.  He wanted a shark on his cake.  That was it….just a shark.  Does this one look familiar?  Think way back – way, way back to your childhood cartoons.  Not an exact replica but similar.  Have you figured it out yet?

This one is a double layer 9×13 vanilla pound cake with vanilla buttercream and a fondant shark.  Mom and Ashton were both pleased.

Flying High!

We have a friend at church who is celebrating his birthday tomorrow.  Jim loves planes and cars.  He pilots his own plane and owns several old cars.  Mary, his wife, said just go with that and do whatever you want.  So here’s Jim’s birthday cake.  It is a chocolate cake with toffee filling and vanilla buttercream.  The plane is mostly fondant with some gumpaste and the banner is gumpaste.  The plane might not be air-worthy but I think it turned out pretty cute!

His Birthday Suit

My father-in-law’s birthday is today.  With all the scheduling around work schedules of my kids and church schedules today we celebrated a day early.  I’m sure he’s still celebrating.  He loves to streeeeetch out the celebrations!  We had a dinner at Outback Steakhouse – my MIL’s treat and then cake and gifts later at their home.  I have a hard time coming up with ideas for cakes for guys.  They don’t seem to like the flowery cakes the ladies like – wonder why?

So, fess up.  How many of you give your dad a shirt and tie as gifts at least once during the year?  Dads are so hard to buy for.  Here’s my version of a shirt at tie.  Actually, it’s a birthday suit everyone can enjoy.  Pumpkin cake, toffee buttercream with toffee chips filling, fondant decorations – mostly chocolate but some vanilla.

Star Studded Birthday!

A friend requested a cake for a family birthday celebration.  The birthday girl is Haley, a typical 13-year-old who likes bright colors.  Those were my design guidelines.  The family had a cake from me the previous week (see it here) and wanted the same flavors just a different look.  The cake is chocolate with a peanut butter filling and vanilla buttercream.  Stars are vanilla fondant.  Myrene and I worked on this one together.  It’s been awhile since we’ve been able to do that.
