Madeline’s Wraslin’, Rock Climbing, Flower Garden Pot!

I’ve been a little busy the last couple of weeks.  Take a look at what’s been happening.

Groom’s Cake for Harrison

Harrison’s thoughtful MIL asked for this one as a surprise for him.  Harrison loves rock climbing and funfetti cake.

Betty turned 80 this week.  Her granddaughter told me she loves hats and flowers.  She even wears a had EVERY day.  This cake is decadent chocolate with Oreo buttercream filling.  The hat and flowers are fondant.

Madeline is turning 3 and she loves the Madeline books.  She wanted her favorite line from the book on her cake.  She also requested ladybugs.

This one was for Sandy, my neighbor.  The pot was formed by stacking 5 – 6″ cake layers.  The flowers are fondant so everything is edible.

Wayna is totally into wrestling so his cake just had to be WWE themed.  We used WWE licensed action figures (dolls) the authentic wrastlin’ look.

Fantasy Flowers

I just love creating fantasy flowers.  I suppose it’s because I don’t have to match them to anything.  I can be totally free to make whatever looks good to me.  Here’s my latest creation.  I guess its similar to a dahlia but not really.  This flower is fondant but it could have been made from gumpaste also.

This cake is for my neighbor’s daughter’s birthday.  Since Rob has been sick they have done so much for us.  You know you always think you have good neighbors but when you need them you realize you have GREAT neighbors.  They have really stepped up to keep our yard looking good while we’ve been unable to take care of it.  Rob and I appreciate everything they have done and are continuing to do for us.

Mickey Mouse Club – Twisted and Warped!  That’s what my husband labeled this one.

This cake was created for my friend Hayden for his 14th birthday.  His idea, not mine.  The four “slices of bread” are fondant covered cake.  The cheese, lettuce, tomato and even our rodent friend are fondant.  If you don’t care for fondant this isn’t your cake!

When I made this cake I wasn’t sure if it would serve the number of people invited to Hayden’s party so I also made cupcakes.  Mom just couldn’t bring herself to cut the cake so everyone at the party ate cupcakes.  Luckily, there were enough cupcakes to go around.  They finally cut the cake the next day at their family celebration.

Remember the light bulb cake last year?  Well, this wimpy cake is for Eric.  He’s got such an original personality.  Eric loves the Wimpy Kid.

As requested, this cake is super decadent chocolate cakes with Ghiradelli chocolate chips.  The cake is covered with vanilla buttercream and the decorations are chocolate buttercream.

Emalee requested cuppies for her birthday and she loves bright colors and flowers.  I was able to locate cupcake liners with a bright floral design I knew Emalee would like.  The cupcakes are vanilla (her favorite) with vanilla buttercream flowers.

I’m told that the family had cupcakes as appetizers before dinner and as dessert after.  Now, that’s my kind of birthday celebration!

I’ve got a little bit of catching up to do…..

As you can tell, this cake is for Nina.  And I bet you didn’t realize that Nina had a birthday.  🙂

This one is a vanilla pound cake with vanilla buttercream.  Yes, you can put buttercream on pound cake.  It’s really good, but then again buttercream makes ANYTHING good.

The flowers are made from fondant.

My friend, Larry, had a birthday party last week.  Larry loves Mountain Dew Code Red as much as I love my Diet Mountain Dew.  You never see Larry without his bottle of Dew.  Normally, it stuck in his jacket pocket.  He likes to tease me when I don’t have mine with me.

Larry’s cake is a double layer 9 x 13 carrot cake with vanilla buttercream.  The cooler and contents are fondant.

This cake has a split personality.  It’s for 2 sisters and a boyfriend.  The cake is strawberry amaretto with vanilla buttercream.

Catherine love the Dave Matthews Band.  I like DMB but I’m not an expert on them so this one took some research.  The “person” on the front is a firedancer.  It’s molded from a combo of fondant and gumpaste.  The splotch is also a DMB emblem I found and the writing on the background is lyric from one of their songs.  I didn’t know it but it just happens to be one of Catherine’s favorite songs.

Christine and Kris’ birthdays are just a few days apart.  Christine is a shoe and purse Diva.  She just loves them.  Kris is a photography enthusiast.  The shoe is made from gumpaste and the camera is a rice crispy treat covered in fondant.  And since I know you want to see that shoe better, here it is.

We finally celebrated Trey’s birthday Saturday night.  Trey turned 21 last Monday but because of some illnesses and work schedules we weren’t able to celebrate with him until Saturday.  Trey requested a cake with the white chocolate/kona filling so the cake just had to be chocolate.  I added chocolate chips to the batter to make it extra decadent and it worked.  The buttercream was kona flavored.  The hat is a huge rice crispy treat covered in fondant.  I added chocolate chips to this also.

After a dinner at Big Ed’s Chicken Pit (Trey’s choice) we dove into this one.  It was great!

Forget-Me-Not

I’ve never had free reign to put anything on a cake I wanted, unless, of course, the cake was requested BY me :-). A friend asked me to bake a cake for her sweet little momma’s 79th birthday. Her only stipulations were 1) It had to be strawberry flavored and 2) Her mom’s not real frilly. So, I experimented. I made it simple, yet colorful…something MY mom would like. I also took the opportunity to practice my scrolling. I scrolled in the same color as the cake, but only on the sides, so it wouldn’t be too “frilly”. I put some forget-me-nots made out of royal icing on it, but those don’t qualify as “frilly”, do they? Nah, I didn’t think so either. I just got a note from my friend that said her mom loved her cake, so I guess we accomplished our mission.

Birthday Weekend

Wow, what a week!  Both my neighbors and my good friends had daughters with birthday celebrations on Saturday.  Gabrielle turned 13 on Friday.  Her folks picked out her cake and I think they made a great choice.  Gabrielle likes animal print and bright pink so this was perfect for her.  The cake is vanilla with chocolate buttercream filling and a vanilla buttercream covering.  The decorations are fondant.  The zebra stripes war painted on the fondant.

Hailee turned 19 on Thursday.  She requested root beer cake but the design was up to me.  I had seen pictures of this type of topsy-turvy cake and wanted to try it so this was a great opportunity.  The bottom tier is root beer cake with root beer icing.  To please everyone at the party, the top layer is marble cake with vanilla buttercream.  The flower stems are piped buttercream and the flowers are fondant.

Funny story here – when Rob first saw the cake I was delivering it to Hailee’s family.  He thought in the transport that something had happened and the cake had shifted.  Then, as others were arriving they made the same comments.

Heather’s Couture

Happy Birthday Heather!  Ok, so it’s a week late . . .  who’s counting?  Well, maybe Heather is.  Last Tuesday my oldest born turned 25.  Yes, I started really, really young.  In fact, before too long she’ll be the same age as me.  🙂  Heather is my perfect child according  to her little brother.  While we all know our kids aren’t perfect, both of mine are good kids – maybe not so much kids anymore though.

Like I said earlier, Heather’s birthday was last week.  We celebrated a day earlier because of work schedules and such.  If you don’t have two (or 3, in my case) adult children to schedule events around you just haven’t lived yet!  Heather’s pretty easy when it comes to her birthday cakes.  She leaves it up to me because she knows I love to experiment on her.  This year I baked her a Kahlua cake with a white chocolate-coffee filling.  It was a new recipe that I found with great reviews.  Turns out everyone was right.  It was fabulous.

The ruffles are made from vanilla fondant.  Each row was individually applied to the side.  The top and fantasy flower are made from chocolate fondant.

. . .  it has been a busy week.

Gingerbread Man for a Christmas Party with friends.  He is, of course, pumpkin gingerbread with fresh grated ginger root.  It really makes the difference in the recipe!

Ambria’s birthday cake.  She’s in the youth group at church.  Chocolate cake, chocolate icing, fondant decorations.

These are for our church elders and their families.  Red Velvet and spice cake each with vanilla buttercream and fondant snowflakes.   One of the wives doesn’t enjoy cake – I didn’t think anyone disliked cake – so I made them a Turtle cheesecake.
