I’ve never had free reign to put anything on a cake I wanted, unless, of course, the cake was requested BY me :-). A friend asked me to bake a cake for her sweet little momma’s 79th birthday. Her only stipulations were 1) It had to be strawberry flavored and 2) Her mom’s not real frilly. So, I experimented. I made it simple, yet colorful…something MY mom would like. I also took the opportunity to practice my scrolling. I scrolled in the same color as the cake, but only on the sides, so it wouldn’t be too “frilly”. I put some forget-me-nots made out of royal icing on it, but those don’t qualify as “frilly”, do they? Nah, I didn’t think so either. I just got a note from my friend that said her mom loved her cake, so I guess we accomplished our mission.

Have I ever shared with you that we have great neighbors!  The whole neighborhood is great but we have super neighbors on both sides of us.  We really take care of each other.

This past weekend Rob and I were out-of-town at Winterfest in Gatlinburg, TN with the youth group at church.  While we were gone our neighbors kept an eye on the house for us.  I left them a Thank You gift in the kitchen.  It is Kahlua cake, white chocolate coffee filling and coffee flavored buttercream.

The caffeine lovers dream!

Let’s Talk…

My husbands all time favorite dessert is brownies. I have a pan I bought long ago with 6 heart shapes, so I decided to make him a special Valentines Day treat – Frosted Conversation Heart brownies. They were cute and delicious! Of course, I also made him some chocolate covered strawberries with some “premium” strawberries. In case you wondered – the premium strawberries are worth the extra price you pay. Each one was huge, ripe and decadently delicious!  Hubby was a happy man!

My step daughter really loves strawberries and almost anything you can make with them. Each year, she requests a strawberry flavored cake on her birthday and I comply. This year was no different. This year, I tried something different because I’m working on my scrolling technique. I made a strawberry patch. Each strawberry was rolled and shaped individually, because, as we all know, no strawberry looks just like another one. I coupled the strawberry cake with butter cream icing instead of the cream cheese I usually pair it with. Heather enjoyed it so much she had two pieces and took the rest of the cake home with her. Now I need to try to top this one next year…already thinking about it.

How do you blend……

NC State and meteorology?  Why, by creating a storm, of course.  Corey’s birthday is this weekend.  His mom asked me for a strawberry cake with a NC State and weather theme.  Corey graduated from State with a meteorology degree.

The NC State logo on the top is stacked fondant – 5 layers in all.  The piping around the side is freehand based on something else I had seen.  It says “Run for cover, your birthday is blowing into town!”
I will never be confused as the next Bob Timberlake but it turned out pretty well, I think.   Corey loved it and that is all that matters.

Our friends were having a gathering for the Super Bowl.  Since they are Pittsburgh Fanatics I knew I couldn’t show up with ANY green.  Here’s my version of a Terrible Towel.  It’s all buttercream.  The black outline of the writing was hand piped.  The cake was lemon with a lemon curd buttercream filling and covered in vanilla buttercream.

I care less than nothing about football.  Who am I kidding!  I care nothing about any sport.  What I like about the Super Bowl are the commercials and the half time show.  Let’s just say the commercials didn’t let me down but the half time left something to be desired.  What did you think?

By the way, because we were at church when the Super Bowl began, we were watching it on delay.  You’ll never believe this but the DVR quit recording before the end of the game.  We missed the last 2 minutes!
