Need a Soap Box?

Tim’s birthday was Friday.  He’s a good friend and also the minister at the church we attend.  I thought it would be appropriate to give him a soap box for his cake.  While searching for photos of old soap boxes I ran across a brand I hadn’t heard of before – Sunlight Soap.  The name had to change to SonLight Soap.  The cake is pumpkin with a pumpkin pie spice buttercream and vanilla fondant.  The fondant has a marbled effect to resemble wood and a stencil was used to create a not too perfect painted label on the box.

Meet Mr Growley

Mr Growley is Jenna’s cake.  She’s been telling me for months she wanted a Mr Growley cake for her birthday this year so here he is….meet Mr Growley.  He’s a chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream filling, chocolate ganache covered and finally covered with vanilla fondant.  Sounds yummy, huh!  The whiskers are wires.  I normally do not add wires in cakes because of food safety issues.  This time I was able to obtain food safe wires from a friend – thanks Maria!

Inspiration for the design came from Studio Cake in California.

Shark Attack!

This cake is for my friend’s son Ashton.  He wanted a shark on his cake.  That was it….just a shark.  Does this one look familiar?  Think way back – way, way back to your childhood cartoons.  Not an exact replica but similar.  Have you figured it out yet?

This one is a double layer 9×13 vanilla pound cake with vanilla buttercream and a fondant shark.  Mom and Ashton were both pleased.

Flying High!

We have a friend at church who is celebrating his birthday tomorrow.  Jim loves planes and cars.  He pilots his own plane and owns several old cars.  Mary, his wife, said just go with that and do whatever you want.  So here’s Jim’s birthday cake.  It is a chocolate cake with toffee filling and vanilla buttercream.  The plane is mostly fondant with some gumpaste and the banner is gumpaste.  The plane might not be air-worthy but I think it turned out pretty cute!

His Birthday Suit

My father-in-law’s birthday is today.  With all the scheduling around work schedules of my kids and church schedules today we celebrated a day early.  I’m sure he’s still celebrating.  He loves to streeeeetch out the celebrations!  We had a dinner at Outback Steakhouse – my MIL’s treat and then cake and gifts later at their home.  I have a hard time coming up with ideas for cakes for guys.  They don’t seem to like the flowery cakes the ladies like – wonder why?

So, fess up.  How many of you give your dad a shirt and tie as gifts at least once during the year?  Dads are so hard to buy for.  Here’s my version of a shirt at tie.  Actually, it’s a birthday suit everyone can enjoy.  Pumpkin cake, toffee buttercream with toffee chips filling, fondant decorations – mostly chocolate but some vanilla.

Baby Bum Once Again

Here’s the latest rendition of the baby bum cake.  This is for one of Heather’s coworkers.  Baby Russell is expected any day now.  This cake is a 12″ Pina Colada cake with vanilla buttercream.  I baked the layers one evening and wrapped them up so they could settle overnight.  When I came in from work the next day my kitchen smelled wonderful.  I almost hated to cover them in buttercream because once they were covered the yummy scent would be sealed up.

Since the cake was for a boy I decided to go with the sports ball theme – baseballs, footballs and basketballs.  All decorations are fondant.  The feet and legs are covered with Belgian chocolate fondant and everything else is vanilla fondant.
