I don’t know why but I’m always surprised when children are reading the same books I read waaaay back when I was a kid. Dr. Seuss’ books are always popular with the young ones. Some things just don’t change with time.

This cake is for little Madeline who is turning 2. The cake is vanilla pound cake with vanilla buttercream icing. The dog is made from rice crispy treats and covered in fondant.

I hope she likes it!

My, my how can I resist you……

I have a friend who’s expecting her third child.  Her first 2 are boys and I mean all boys.  She’s been waiting so long for a girl.  Don’t get me wrong, boys are wonderful but they won’t wear lace tights and hair bows.  Well, since Shanna has been eagerly anticipating her new arrival and is enjoying the anticipation of dressing her little girl in all the girly girl things her shower cake just had to reflect her desires.

The cake is lemon with a strawberry filling and vanilla buttercream.  The “lace” around the bottom is fondant as well as the flowers.  The bow and name are gumpaste.  I hope Shanna was thrilled with the cake.

Does this remind you of a Henna Tattoo?

Remember as kids going to the beach a coming home with a tattoo?  Well, a temporary one anyway.  When I finished this cake it reminded me of those tattoos.

Myrene has had these paisley shaped pans for months now and we have been looking for an opportunity to use them.  It’s such a fun shape.  Well, this week opportunity came a knockin’.  My birthday was Thursday.  For some reason my family won’t make a cake for me and they know better than to buy one from the grocery!  So, I decided to take the opportunity and try something new.  No matter how it turned out I figured the birthday girl wouldn’t mind.  I made and orange cake with a creamy chocolate filling.   I love chocolate and orange together.  The cake is covered with vanilla buttercream and the piping is vanilla buttercream, also.

Sandy Beaches!!!

My daughter has a work friend who is getting married soon.  He and his fiancée are going to Jamaica to get married.  Actually, they are going to the same resort my daughter and son-in-law honeymooned.  Heather and Matt loved it so I’m sure Dustin & Gina’s wedding will be wonderful.

Heather and her co-workers are giving Dustin a wedding shower this week and asked me to make the cake.  Since they will be having a beach wedding I figured why not a beach cake.  The cake layers are lemon and the filling is a lemon-y buttercream.  Dustin loves all things lemon!  The cake is covered in a vanilla buttercream and then graham cracker/brown sugar mixture to simulate the sand.  Sea shells are made from fondant.  The initials represent writing in the sand.  Hope they like it!

Another Purse….

My neighbor’s birthday was Saturday.  Her kids and husband requested a purse cake.  The girls thought red would be a good color.  I just don’t like working with a lot of red.  The intense dye makes it taste bitter.  So, on the second favorite color – green.  Now, I’m a green person.  I love green anywhere– walls, clothes, food, whatever.  I just love green.  So, green I can do.  I selected an electric green.  I know, the picture looks yellow but it is really green.

I started this cake looking to do an unstructured looking bag, kind of slouchy.  As I attempted to apply the fondant I realized that slouchy takes work!  I needed another set of hands but Myrene was out-of-town so I was out of luck.  So, Plan B evolved.  I think they will be pleased.

The cake is a citrus blend of orange, lemon and pineapple.  (Is pineapple citrus?  If not, it is now.)  The result is a light summery flavored concoction.  I was very pleased with it.  The buttercream under the fondant is the same flavor and the fondant is buttercream flavor.  However, the brown trim work is chocolate fondant and the writing is chocolate icing.

I received a call last weekend asking for this cake.  Since, I finally have the Margarita cake recipe tweaked to my liking I agreed to make it.  I would be away from home most nights this week so it would be a challenge to get it ready.  I baked it  very, very late Tuesday evening and finished it up on Thursday evening.  (I haven’t gotten into bed before midnight any this week.)

Obviously, the layers are Margarita, tinted green to add to the appeal.  The buttercream is flavored with lime.  This cake made a trip to the beach today.  Hopefully, it’s not in the sand.  Now, they just need a Cheeseburger in Paradise…..

Jimmy Buffett would be proud!!!
