Fun Stuff!

Two weeks after Boss’ Day, came my boss’ birthday. I had already put the company logo on a cake, so that wasn’t gonna happen again…you can only do that once and make brownie points. This time, since it wasn’t a milestone birthday (of course I think you can argue that, at our age, all of them are milestones ūüôā ), I just decided to make a fun cake.¬†¬†

I remembered that a long time ago, she was crazy about snickerdoodles, so Deah had this great snickerdoodle recipe and I modified a cinnamon buttercream recipe. Then, I cut out some fondant circles of different sizes and colors to create this tasty and fun cake.  Serve this, as I did, with butter pecan ice cream and you have a great flavor combination!

I Bowled a 301

My step daughter works at a bowling alley (she is in college) so, I thought I might try to play on that with her birthday cake. My first thought was to make the bowling pins out of gum paste. But, as the time grew nearer, I thought, “Ah, I’ll just laminate some pictures of pins and put them in the cake with tooth picks.” Deah said, “Anyone can do that…you need to make the gum paste pins.” So, Deah came over to see my chocolate fondant (my first try at chocolate fondant) and ended up staying to help with the bowling pins AND placing the lettering on the cake. Thanks, Deah!

100_2539The ball is marbled gum paste. Ashley had a pink marbled bowling ball when she was younger, so that’s what I decided to put on the cake.

When it was finished, Deah and I were both pleased with the way it turned out. And Ashley thought I had bowled a three hundred and one! What? You can’t bowl a three hundred and one? Have you ever known any one to bowl a three hundred and lose??? One? Won…

Happy Boss’ Day!

You should never let a good opportunity to schmooze the boss pass you by, right? Well, I decided to make my boss a cake for “Boss’ Day”. I thought, “Our logo can’t be THAT hard, can it? After all, it’s just three interlocking circles…” Well, little did I know, that circles would be some of the hardest things I have ever put on a cake. Was I surprised!

I put off decorating it until the last minute, and wouldn’t you know that I didn’t have any red food color. So, my husband had to go to Wal-Mart at 9:30 pm to get some. Okay, he didn’t HAVE to, but he did it anyway. What a sweethheart! Anyway, this is the result and my boss loved it. She said, “Oh, this is my very first Ortho-Tech cake ever!” *smile*¬†¬†¬† 100_2530

Groom’s Cake 1.0

MiceThis is our first Groom’s Cake so I’m giving it the official title of Groom’s Cake 1.0 – pretty fitting, I think.

This cake was for my new son-in-law, Matt.¬† I volunteered to create the Groom’s Cake and was excited about the design possibilities.¬† Matt requested a cheese looking cake and that was it.¬† So my mind went to work on it a few months ago.¬† I tested different shapes, cheese styles and construction.¬† Once I had a design picked I started quizzing Matt on his favorite cake flavors.¬† (He’s been one of my taste testers so he knows his cakes!)¬† Matt picked lemon, chocolate and vanilla flavors.¬†¬† I kept the design a secret from Matt; Heather only got a few hints along the way.¬† I wanted it to be a surprise.

Heather and Matt were married last Sunday in Wilmington.   Facing an out of town wedding, I started baking on Thursday morning and finished the entire cake Thursday evening, traveled to Wilmington on Friday, with the rehearsal dinner on Saturday (we served the cake at the rehearsal dinner).  The cake was transported as separate layers and assembled just before the rehearsal.

The bride & groom mice and grapes are gum paste.  The cakes were Swiss (lemon), Parmesano Reggiano (vanilla), and Sharp Cheddar (chocolate).

Let me know what you think.

Thank You For Serving

How do you decorate a cake for a soldier coming home from Iraq? Well, the person throwing the party thought that camouflage might be fun…and, I agree, it would.

But, then I wondered, “Why did he go over there to begin with?” I mean, he didn’t go over there because he thought he would have a good time. Hey, war is not fun.

Wayne went over there because he loves our country. He went over there to fight for the freedom of others; freedom most of us take for granted.

Then I asked my friend if he thought a flag would be more appropriate. After all, it is our national symbol for freedom. Listen to the words about our flag: “Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave o’er the land of the free…and the home of the brave?” We are free because brave men like Wayne served our country. Thank you Wayne and all the soldiers¬†who have sacrificed for our freedom!

Slam Dunk!

100_2517A friend of a friend of a friend called the other day and wanted a 50th birthday cake for her husband. I asked her what design she’d like and she said she hadn’t thought about it. I kind of thought she might take the “Over the Hill” route, but she didn’t. I asked her if he liked any sport in particular and she said he liked basketball. Then she said he was the coach for a childrens community basketball team. So, We honored him with a “Basketball” Cake for a birthday that was a slam dunk!
